John, When you buy a license for MLO/Windows you will receive an email with
an activation code that you copy and then paste into an MLO registration
window.

You can install on multiple computers. I think there's some legality like
all of the installations have to be for your personal use, you can use one
license to install a copy for every member of your team.

There is nothing like an every five month reregistration. The activation
code does not expire. Eventually there will be a major version update and
your registration code will not work on the new version. You can continue to
use the old version although support will eventually fade away, or you can
but license to the upgrade. Upgrade licenses usually cost less than new
licenses.

There's no limit to the number of times you can re-install, however this is
a productivity tool and if you are spending a lot of time reinstalling that
would have to cut into your productivity. You should really consider the
"portable version" that Mark suggested, which entails installing to a flash
drive, then carrying the flash drive with you and plugging in to whatever
computer you want to use. This also addresses the issue of installing to a
computer without internet access. If you want an actual on-computer
installation on a computer without Internet access here is what you have to
do:

1. Install on a computer that -does- have Internet Access

2. Register your license

3. On the registration screen, use the function to export registration
data to a file

4. Use the file to register your nonconnected computer. I *think* the
way this works is that you copy the registration file into the same folder
as the MLO program and then start MLO. If that's not right, get back in
touch and somebody will look it up in the user guide for you.

Once you are set with licensed copies on all of your computers and
reinstallation every time you wipe a computer, then you will want to think
about your tasks themselves. Will every computer have its own distinct set
of tasks? Will you start over with an empty list every time you reinstall?
If either answer is "no" you will want way to share tasks across computers.
If you use the portable version it's easy, just keep the tasks on the same
flash drive and remember to back it up regularly. If you are using
on-computer installations, you will want to sync your tasks. The two most
common sync methods are cloud and wifi (there are others). The nonconnected
computer is pretty much limited to wifi. You could use wifi for all of them
but if you are syncing a lot of computers the constant unpairing and
repairing of computers could get burdensome. For computers that access the
Internet, cloud sync does a great job of propagating the latest set of tasks
across all of your computers.

Regarding getting your data out, you can also export the data and import it
elsewhere. The process works but involves a bit of manual tweaking and
editing to try to achieve compatibility across competing programs, and it's
not exactly automatic or easy.

John,

I cannot answer all the questions, but I use the portable version, if you
used that then installation on multiple machines, re-formatting your drive
would also not then be an issue.

As for the connection to the internet, and activation expiry, I don't think
once installed the licence is checked i.e. I don't think MLO connects to a
licence server periodically, but I am not certain of that. Someone else
more familiar should be able to answer that for you. But I use MLO Windows
portable mostly behind firewalls, which would prevent access to a licence
server, so I would have thought I'd have hit the problem by now....

I would send your questions to the pre-sales contact address to get the
definitive answer...

-How does activation work?...
-Can I install on more than one machine? (I use at least 3 different
computers...desktop, laptop, work)
-Will my activation expire if I reinstall? (i.e. "you've activated your
software too many times")
-Will my activation expire after a certain amount of time? (I saw the
discussion on this from a few years ago, suggesting a 5 month constant
renewal cycle

deal-breaker for me)
-What if I need to install on a machine with no Internet access?

I'm simply afraid of setting everything up putting data in, and relying on
the software...and then not being able to use it or get my data out at some
point.

Thanks for any help you can provide.
