Follow-up Comment #2, bug #15136 (project mypaint):
I'm strongly in favour of layer modes rather than brush modes too. For one
thing, the GIMP plugin might generate them one day. For another, it gives you
a limited way of making simple, striking changes in aggregate, trying one
thing then another (for all that mypaint isn't photoshop or the GIMP).
Finally, it's what users are used to from other paint programs out there.
