To handle the scheduling, recording and transcoding. Slave backends can do recordingand transcoding, but I'm pretty sure the master backend is in charge of scheduling and the database. >MythTV seems to run perfectly well for my purposes when I >don't run it, except I keep seeing warnings about it not running. >Is the way I am using it so a-typical that it doesn't think it's a valid >configuration? Yes, you are not normal ;-) Then again, who on this list is? >I am just using it for playing recorded mpegs (previously >recorded using a ReplayTV) and for recording and playing >DVDs. A few of the other things are nice - eg weather/news/etc, >but not my primary use. Then you don't need MythTV. Using any old machine with linux or winderz will work for your purposes. >I am in China and there's only one channel which has English, and it's >only news, so I'm really not interested in TV recording. > >Can I do without the back end? As much as I hate to say this, you don't need the frontend either. But yes, if you want to use a frontend only configuration, there is no need for a backend if you don't need to record or access any of the cool extras (as you've noted). Paul
