Alas, those produce the same effect I had seen before.  I went ahead and
tried a several 540p and 1080i modes I found floating around, but they
all resulted in the same thing.  Here's a picture which will hopefully
illustrate what the problem is:

By disabling EDID I was able to get X to start up in a 1080i resolution,
but it has the same effect as 540p (or even anything beyond a 640x480 or
720x480).

Any suggestions on how I can fine-tune to make things work properly?
