Melody,  I totally agree.  Even a seasoned tech can learn something new.

I have always said, and still say:
If a tech is fresh off the press, he or she should start as a commissioned
employee…. PREFERRABLY in a salon where there are other nail techs who have
been in the biz at least 5 yrs or more… that way you can gain much needed
mentorship and learn a few tricks of the trade….

UNLESS they have startup funds for product and equipment and have means to suck
it up for the first year—or however long it takes—to build clientele.

It is sooooo hard to work alone in a salon as an IC and really make it.  Every
nail tech needs to be under someone’s wing to learn from.

If there was a cap on rent that might not be a bad deal. What does rent go for
in her area? She doesn't want to end up paying more then that. I started out on
commission and went to rent after a year. I think starting out renting is to
stressful unless you just have a spouse that is willing to support you and pay
your rent. Let someone else buy the supplies at first, till you figure out what
you like and don't like. You can waste a lot of money trying new products. I
think I am the queen of that! I could never go back to comm. now. It would be
like moving back home with mom, so start out on comm. and make it easier on
yourself starting out. That would be my advice.

Hmmm...so on a 25.00 client she is paying 8.75 (if my math is correct) times 5
a day= a bit less than 45.00
a day...(I am rounding it to 9 to make it easy!) times 5 days=225.00 a
week...add another 25.00 to cover that 100.00 for receptionist...that's about
250.00 a week!!  ok so she might not have alot of clients to begin with...so it
might not be that much ....AT FIRST.  IF she has 1 client a day at 25.00 (pays
owner 8.75) times 5= 43.75plus 25.00=68.75....she is bringing in 125.00
...still not really making anything!!  Until she has a clientele...she should
be an employee...IMHO!!

125.00 - 68.75=56.25   out of that she needs to budget for insurance, product,
license, etc....

Hey everyone. Question for those that have been in the industry. I was talking
to a new nail tech fresh from school. She was telling me she got a job as an
independent contractor for a brand new salon. She can use their tables, towels,
etc... but has to use her own lotion, cuticle oils, implements,etc.. They are
giving her 65% and they are taking 35% BUT then they are charging her $100.00 a
month for a receptionist fee AND charging her to use their credit card machine
AND said that in a few months they are reinstating other fees they are waiving
because she is new. I told her that was a rip off. What are everyone's thoughts
on this? I just want her to be treated fair since she is new and does not know
any different.
