First: an independent contractor MAY be paid on commission. This is one of the
biggest misinformations that gets tossed around in our industry that makes me
have to take a moment to step away from the computer so I can pull out some
hair and jump up and down and scream... thus causing my dogs no small amount of
anxiety. And since one of the dogs tends to get gassy when he's anxious, it
would be really really beneficial if we could all just understand and accept
that it IS POSSIBLE to be an independent contractor and still be paid on
commission. (Think Tupperware, Avon, Partylite, Arbonne, Mary Kay, etc-- ALL
paid by commission, ALL independent contractors. And don't think those
companies haven't coughed up the attorney fees over the decades to make sure
they have iron clad contracts!)

Second: a 65/35% commission seems reasonable for a furnished station where the
tech still supplies her own product and implements. Plus $25 a week
(essentially) for the receptionist-- could be worse.

How MUCH are they going to charge her for use of the credit card processing
machine/service?

And WHAT fees are they waiving that will be reinstated?

Will this salon keep her busy? Is she likely to build a clientelle there? What
is the up side of taking this job?

The deal alone doesn't seem unfair, but whether or not it's a smart choice
depends on what her other options are. Also, where is this tech located? What
is the market like in that area? What are prices for services in the area? What
is the demand for services in the area? Where is her current skill set? And
what is typical booth rent going for and are there other commission salons to
choose from?

Hey everyone. Question for those that have been in the industry. I was talking
to a new nail tech fresh from school. She was telling me she got a job as an
independent contractor for a brand new salon. She can use their tables, towels,
etc... but has to use her own lotion, cuticle oils, implements,etc.. They are
giving her 65% and they are taking 35% BUT then they are charging her $100.00 a
month for a receptionist fee AND charging her to use their credit card machine
AND said that in a few months they are reinstating other fees they are waiving
because she is new. I told her that was a rip off. What are everyone's thoughts
on this? I just want her to be treated fair since she is new and does not know
any different.
