I'm also a non-confrontational person.  I had to fire a client once in 22
years and I did it through a letter.  This woman was a real psycho!!!!  I
tried to do it in person and she freaked so a letter it ended up being.  
If you are worried about a scene, do it over the phone.  If she doesn't get
it, a letter works nicely.  Emails are actually less impersonal then an old
fashioned letter.  But as Cindy said, it's best to face to face or over the
phone.  I know, it stinks but you'll feel better after you deal with it!
