They're about 2 feet wide and they're painted dark brown-- yes, the dust is a 
killer! (I don't have studs in my walls, they're all hollow brick, but also, 
because of the length of the racks the weight of the bottles applies downward 
pressure in a way that doesn't put too much stress on the top brackets.)
