First let me say that the only thing I like better than a really
puzzling mechanical problem, is solving the problem. You have made my
holiday season here.
When you say you have spark, can I assume you tested it at the end
of the spark plug wires, not at the wire from the ignition coil to the
distributor? Shorted rotors are very rare, but I had one once, and I
have also had the spring loaded finger in the middle of the rotor
break off.
I have never heard of all 8 spark plugs getting so badly fouled at
one time that they wont fire, but I suppose its possible. Can you
remove a couple of plugs and see what they look like?
If the carburetor is getting fuel, then you should be able to see
fuel squirting into the area below the venturis but above the throttle
plate, as you rotate the throttle open. This is the accelerator pump
function doing its job. That would at least tell you the carb was
getting fuel into its float chambers. And once in there, if you tried
to start it with the choke plate shut, you certainly should get a
burnable mixture into the engine. Then if your ignition was
working...it should run. Unless of course it has gotten a lot of
water in the gas? This is where the can of engine starting fluid
would be a good diagnostic technique.
You talk about a chalk mark on the damper. And I agree that
checking the timing marks with the engine running is just about
lethal. Anyway, the mark I would have expected on the damper would
have been a slot. People rub chalk on it so it will show up better.
Personally I paint mine with gloss white.
From the diagram in the service manual for the 318 v8, the #1
cylinder terminal on the distributor cap would be toward the front of
the motor, and more or less pointing to the carburetor, rather than
pointing toward the valve cover. Is that the way yours is?
