Interesting....it certainly sounds like you're getting SOME spark.   Whether it's all happening in the right place at the right time is unknown, but there HAS to be spark to make it fire at all. 

If I were you, I'd put the aircleaner back on, but leave the wingnut a wee bit loose.  Fill the bowl where the wingnut lives with a little fuel and fire the thing up.  As the gas gets sucked down the threads, it will work like the worlds crudest carburetor, but it will run if all else is in order. 

That's also a good way to prime a carb after running completely out of gas...MUCH safer than pouring it directly down the carb throat...a backfire then can ruin your day if the air cleaner cover isn't in place! 

If, after supplying fuel, it wants to start, but won't, or runs scarily rough...it's time to go back to the firing order and finding #1 cylinder to time it on.

Glad I'm not you, but it probably won't end up being a bad as you're probably thinking, once you've located the bug.
