How about our most current sail? As in New Years Day. It's a bit of a
tradition with us to anchor out on New Years Eve. Due to a dredge in our canal,
we got out late in the day, but found a spot away from the crazies where we
could still see some fireworks. The cockpit of an f-boat is a great place to
toast in the new year.
We were up early (I love to watch the sky change from black to dark blue to
pink), and after omeletts for breakfast, headed out into the Gulf. The winds
were light here (10 - 12), but the water was still choppy. We put on the
autopilot (haven't used it in a while) and sat back to enjoy the ride... and the
view of our new UK mainsail, glowing in the sunlight.
When our bellies told us it was time for lunch, we sailed back into the
Laguna and anchored where we could see the excursion boat traffic (lots of other
folks wanting to be out on the water). Joan made us some lunch, then she sat
in the cockpit to read while I took a nap out on the net. In the sunshine.
In shorts and a t-shirt.
Properly refreshed, we set sail and headed north along the Intracoastal.
The wind shifted from SE to E, allowing us to close reach our way back south; I
hope this is an early indicator of how this year is going to go! When we
neared the swing bridge to our little island, Joan said, "Let's take the long way
around." Rather than tack a million times (heading east), we motor-sailed to
where we could get a good tack south and made our way to the Brownsville Ship
Channel.
We were treated to a sunset dolphin show in the sparkly water as we sailed
west. The winds had lighted up, but we were still making 6.5 knots downwind.
When we came to the turning basin where we normally drop the sails, we
decided to make a quick pass under just the mainsail along the north side of the
island. With the sky turning pink, we turned into the wind, rolled up the main,
and motored into our canal, squeezing by the dredge before tying up to our
dock. Joan turned on the dock lights and made us drinks while I hosed off the
boat.
Nice way to start the new year.
Happy Sails to You,
