OK, you guys, you have convinced me, I will give ICSP a try in my next
project.
@Adam: I once bought a programmer from DIY electronics with USB port,
and it worked fine once (!) and then ceased to connect to my PC
properly. As I found out later, it was probably due to some weird USB
chip on the PCB.
But I believe that official 1st party tools are still the way to go if
you want to save yourself the trouble. Of course, there are exceptions,
but I'll leave that to others right now.
The MCLR issue is the reason why they cannot be programmed anymore,
sure, that sounds right. But could a PicKit 2 or 3 program these anyway?

The PicKit 3 is an excellent programmer. Very low cost (USD45), USB, very
fast,
all 16F and 18F chips supported. I love it!
