That Dave Jones guy (at the EEVBlog) is a hoot ! The original Pickit3 review is over a year old (Oct 2009). I suspect Microchip 'fixed' the firmware on the Pickit3. Its the successor to the Pickit-2, but distributors will sell you one if they have them. Its not a pack of stale potato chips:
