The 555 designs are generally "brute force" designs, and tend to be less efficient but more tolerant of suboptimal layout. By changing the operating frequency, you also can have some control of layout critical-ness -- higher frequencies are more sensitive to layout details, but lower frequencies require larger inductors and the like. > I plan to layout my > own ONE-SIDED through-hole board and let the auto-router make most of > the decisions about placement. This is a terrible idea with any SMPS (IMHO). The auto-router simply doesn't have any concept of which traces are current carrying, which coupling is dangerous, and how bad a few corners can be. You really want to lay out SMPS designs by hand.
