Great to hear from you. I am referring to the multitude of ribbon cable
that runs the lenghth of the board, four connectors for each channel. As
you know, it's a 50 ch board plus 8 stereo channels, that's a lot of
connectors. When a channel is removed for service or fault detection, you
need to be very careful not to stress the ribbon cable and it's associated
connector. In some areas of the console, it is nearly impossible to remove
a channel strip without inadvertantly yanking the connector right off the
channel before you can even get a hand to it to remove it properly (not
enough length on the cable). .
Over time, this has taken its toll on these IDC connections.
As mentioned earlier, our Elite is from 1986, perhaps this system improved
in later models. I wouldn't say that we are "having a problem" with this,
just that it is frustrating and does cause issues on channels periodically.
I have fantasized about replacing the ribbon cable and adding new
connectors, which is what I thought Greg was up to on his SII. Big job for
us.

That is what is known as an "Insulation Displacement Connection" or
IDC. Done properly they are very reliable. It's not clear what area of
your Elite you are having problems with.
The .156 Molex connections on an Elite that are on ribbon cable are the
bussing for the meter cards. The other .156 Molex connections are the
audio i/o to each strip, which use 2 conductor shielded microphone type
cable. The only place in an Elite that has the type of Molex connections
that Greg is working on is the motherboard in the master section. This has
always been a problem area in this console.
The other, smaller, IDC connectors in the console are .100 AMP or
Panduit connectors.

The main problem with our 1986 Elite is the ribbon cable is pushed into
the 'teeth' of the molex connector and that is it, job done. Which has
never seemed to be a particularly stable connection. Not familiar with
