Originally, in the days of yor, we actually supported shared libraries without libtool. But we supported it under a small set of architectures (though you could try it on new ones). There was an work-arounds/exception list coded into configure. When we migrated to libtool we had to go through it's libtool-usage pain, but in the end we supported more architectures than we could previously and we got the benefit of outsourcing the configure management pain. So regardless of usage problems that libtool creates, I still believe it's the best choice. So I'll state that my complaints and whining are only because there isn't a better choice (that I'm aware of). I wouldn't shift away from libtool to a self-maintained system again. But I would like to consider something new if something better exists; but I don't believe it does. [I vaguely recall recent rumors that someone was trying to build something better; but I don't remember what it was called and I do remember that it's not ready yet either] -- Wes Hardaker Sparta, Inc. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- This SF.net email is sponsored by DB2 Express Download DB2 Express C - the FREE version of DB2 express and take control of your XML.
