But which version should of the perl module should CPAN be updated to use?

   -  The most recent release ?
           (which may well be newer than the libraries
            installed by default on "most systems")

   -   The "most common" default installation ?
          (on what system?  Who decides?)

   -   Something else?

Essentially, yes.

Because there are multiple versions of the libraries out there,
and there are close links between the perl module and the C libraries,
then some time ago we took the decision to encourage people
to use the matching version of the source tree for the perl module code.
   (always assuming that the vendor doesn't already provide a suitable
matching net-snmp-perl module, which is the ideal solution)


If you can think of a better way of leveraging CPAN in a reliable manner,
we'd love to hear it.
  We're not just being bloody minded about ignoring CPAN :-)
