I don¹t travel around to look at art. I agree, that would be a luxury. I
travel to put art in front of audiences or to attend meetings that are
intended to make things happen, or setup new connections between
institutions, artists and others, or assist others in achieving their aims.
The creative arts are international and should be, with people everywhere
able to place their work before global audeinces and those audiences able to
access art from anywhere. Where art is material in nature the artefacts need
to travel, as do the artists and curators. It is, in the end, all about
discourse and the exchange of information and other resources. Only so much
can be done via the internet and, as has been pointed out, that is possibly
a false economy anyway (bandwidth has a carbon footprint too).

We could join the slow-movement and only consume food, culture and resources
produced on our doorstep...but wouldn¹t this mean a return to a time when we
were all provincial and could only see as far as our own local interest, as
far as our own nose?

I think discourse (exchange) is the means by which people and society get
smarter and improve things (sort of paraphrasing Newton¹s comments on
giant¹s shoulders). Global discourse is a wonderful thing and we want to
ensure it is sustainable. My feeling is that the means to do that are more
likely to be developed through global discourse than through pulling our
horns in and staying at home.

But we can all learn to turn off the lights and use energy efficient
alternatives.

Regards

Simon

Subject: Re: [NetBehaviour] We won't fly for art : Take the Pledge

hey all

i took this pledge, but it's easy for me as i barely get any time to
dedicate to art as it is, the idea that i would have the time and money to
fly somewhere to see it is almost absurd. for some of you guys it looks more
challenging, and it really the challenged that should be taking this pledge.
for me it's like saying 'i pledge to carry on pretty much as i already am
doing'.

if you really need to fly to the art, because you live in rochdale or
reykvavik or whatever and the local scene is a bit flat, perhaps you should
be putting energy into revitalising that local scene, rather than spend time
surfing for cheap flights to new york.
