Agreed. In the worst case, how practical is it to just have a Y2K
fixed version of the last update for NC2? A date bug fix, with no new
features. (Assuming the sources for each significant release is kept of
course, something I'm a bit lax on from time to time at work *grin*).

Really, the fact a Y2K issue is present in a piece of software
available until even a few months prior to 2000 is a serious one and
reflects badly on an application which is otherwise very good, if a
little quirky.

Yep. While some would argue it's an 'incentive' to buy NC3 (which
begs the question: shouldn't an upgrade to NC3 be based on incentives
other than just correct date handling?), some would also argue that an
update for older software gives a good impression of the commitment
and support provided by the developer which may ultimately persuade
people to upgrade to NC3.
