As you say, a real shame. But that's human nature I suppose.  We don't realise
what we've got until we've lost it.

Just after the war I lived close to a military airfield, and in a large field
just off the base there were about 800 Wellington bombers.  They just stood
there for ages, until a demolition firm (scrap merchant?) was called in.
This provided well paid but short lived employment for some of the locals,
but what a waste !

More recently, the wreckage of a Wellington was recovered from a lake and
presumably restored.  I can't remember the details, but it must have cost
a fortune.

There are many examples of this sort of thing but these days we are more aware,
and better equipped to preserve what will be of interest in the future.

Now, whatever happened to my button stick, housewife, forage cap and kit bag ?
