If I get you correctly, the easiest method is to delete the mails
(select the mail and use the Del key or choose Message/Delete from
the menu bar). When you close the folder, deleted mails will be put
into Trash.
To remove the entire contents of a mail folder, select the folder and
choose Groups/Remove Group(s) from the menu bar. This should give you
an option to either delete the contents of the folder, or delete the
folder and its contents in one go.
