That's like putting left-overs from dinner in the trash with the idea
of getting them out later. Trash is trash.

I doubt it very much. If you had no trash folder how would you ever
delete mails?
One major omission from MD (unless I have overlooked it) is the
ability to save messages as files. In every other program I use, I
use that for messages I want to keep forever.
