In theory you can.
There are some very experience developer out there that do that.
If you are new to ND you should not try to do that.

There are other files hiden from you that the studio generates and it would be very 
difficult for you to manually generate them unless you know their content and write 
some utility yourself.

But you can use other editors for java, html files.
Actually inside the studio you can change the editor for either one.
Then when you click the button it will launch your editor and load the file in it for 
you.
I use the Visual studio from ms to do most of my editing because I have been using it 
for many year and does not want to change.
