Check your config.sys for Shell=Command.com
Put a colon between the e and 4096
thusly /e:4096
Also, do you actually have command.com in your root directory? You
might want to consider putting it elsewhere and adding "elsewhere" as
first item in your path statement. Of course, in config.sys and
autoexec.bat you should always use full path statements anyway. Here
are my two lines on the shell ..
SHELL=C:\DOS\COMMAND.COM C:\DOS\ /E:512 /P
SET COMSPEC=C:\DOS\COMMAND.COM
