Thanks for your "rant", Philip. Thus dear Tom B. has fallen into the
Window$ trap full speed too; the worse so - if one looks at the code -
as it has been rotten *bad* HTML.

This said; where is Nettamer with decoding HTML in mails ?
(Using my own offline reader I have no practice with the READER.EXE's
shortcomings any more.)

I ask because there is one reasonable point to use either - very soberly
and clean - HTML or MIME "Quoted Printable" in email: An overwhelming
numbr of ISPs just shit on established standards (and RFCs) and destroy
all mails containing 8-bit characters by illegally "autoconverting" to
Win$hit charsets. This renders such mails in French, German or what-not
(even Apple-Mac mailers in ASCII setting nevertheless pass some
quotation marks in 8-bit) simply illegible.

(This goes through the whole chain and it's really difficult to pinpoint
the a precise SMTP, forwarder, or POP3 server causing the merde. But
that's another story.)

Work-around could be using QP or a *barest* HTML formatting which would
consist just of the minimum of a <HTML><title></title><body> header and
a <pre> tag, but then - and that's the point - using the HTML-defined
char "entities" to code for all 8-bits.

Contrary to MIME-QP (which re-translates encoded 8-bits to a "wrong"
character set if the orignal was encoded in another char-set than the
one you use), decoding of HTML-"entities" like "&auml;" for the small
German Umlaut-a is done into the char-set installed on your machine (if
set right in the HTML converter).

HTML at least, is a "standard" which *does* pass unharmed the chain saw
massacre of illegal server programming.

Thus, what's needed then is a very basic (and definitely not M$hitty
outcast) encoding of the *whole* mail body - for heavens sake no
attachment creation - and a likewise straightforward decoding in the
offline reader.

Could be even a Nettamer plug-in by Tom ? (<g>)
