>> One another person I can think of is an IAS officer in TN Cadre called
>> Umashankar. He was the MD of ELCOT. He single-handedly moved a good
>> lot of govt offices in TN to FOSS. It was a mammoth and great effort.
>> So much so that folks were swearing by the ease of use of FOSS.

As Debayan mentioned, I got a chance to interact with Mr. Umashankar
while he had come for a conference in Bangalore. Thanks to Karthik
from FSMK who introduced me to Mr. Umashankar. He is a strong believer
and supporter of FOSS. His work can be noticed in www.elcot.in He has
uploaded linux drivers on a government website and seen to it that
Computer Hardwares which support GNU/Linux will only be procured by TN
state government. Elcot also bought all the rights of Tamil Fonts from
a private organisation and now as released it free for download, hence
saving the TN state government to buy the fonts each and every time.
He himself uses Ubuntu for all his official purposes and had seen to
it that all IAS officers in the state get preloaded GNU/Linux laptops.
He took the training for them himself.

Luckily since he was free yesterday evening, we visited Ambedkar
Computer Community Centre, which is an initiative by FSMK. Here are
some pics,
