Maybe you missed it, but they did broadcast some superb stuff on DD in the 70s and 80s. And even the 90s. Bharat ek Khoj, Tamas, Star Trek, Sherlock Holmes featuring Jeremy Brett, Ray's 'Sadgati', Attenborough's 'Living Planet', pretty much every national award winning feature film and documentary (sometimes after a court order, as with Anand Patwardan, mostly not), and Brook's Mahabharat. Unfortunately, they also did Chopra's Mahabharat.
