Agreed, but my statement was not about security, but to point out that the version shipped is merely to hook unaware users with a crippled version, even though a fully functional version is shipped with the machine.
Thanks. Sorry, I had misunderstood your point. Could you please elaborate on:
All we have to prove is that MOST systems are not available without OS and very many are installed with a crippled edition (Windows Vista Home Edition).
How exactly is WVHE a "crippled edition"?
I am sure that none of the machines listed specifically as "Dos" or Ubuntu are available either without OS or with some linux. Someone will have to confirm that though. One will have to be a little careful while making a statement, as some small parts of some machines do not work with linux, unless one tweaks somethings eg. 3D accel or wireless.
I recently bought a Thinkpad which listed "PC DOS 2000" as the OS, and it came without an OS (AFAICT, since the DOS command prompt didn't show up).
Essentially linux option is available only on machines with substantially lower performance, even though any distro will run far better than doze.
Not sure how one could make that claim, since it is quite possible that wireless drivers, etc., don't work out-of-the-box with a Linux distro while working on Windows. (I would know since I am facing that problem right now, with a kernel update that's supposed to help apparently not helping many people.)
More often, the Linux option is not available at all. Regards, Pranesh -- Pranesh Prakash Programme Manager Centre for Internet and Society W: http://cis-india.org | T: +91 80 40926283
