Hi ! Before you make an issue of this , please check if they have the platform for SSO like OpenID and anyone can join with an e-mail ID which is SSO compliant . It may be gmail is one of the players. Also instead of simply raising slogans against gmail, see how you can provide an alternative and give some constructive suggestions. Are you willing to pitch in and help them if they need help in SSO ?
So the first step may be asking them what is the road map and if the follow standards for OpenID . There are many open source platforms for openID.
