Mike,
I think there is one important thing to notice. The sys/mac.h header
file is omitted from *Sun's* distribution of OpenSolaris. It is the
distributor who decides what to put in and what to leave out. And
each and every distribution creator may be after different goals
and targeting different audience. So it may be less of attitude,
but rather more of business decision.
