Maybe your problem is simply not having X configured right?  Before blaming the
CPU or something else, first I'd try Xconfigurator and using the lowest monitor
setting, and setting the resolution to 640x480 and color depth to 256 colors.

If X doesn't work with those settings then I guess you do have some other
problem I wouldn't know how to help you with (incompatible video card maybe?). 
And you should of course make sure that Cyrix isn't overclocked which seems to
be what causes problems for other people..

If X DOES work at 640x480 and 256 colors then I would try different
resolutions/color depths until finding the best one that works.
