This reminds me about some talk about Cyrix processor hangs on the
linux-kernel mailing list shortly before the 2.2.0 release.

The general consensus in the kernel list was that the problem was very
probably 2.1.x making more efficient use of the CPU, and the CPU not being
able to handle this. Might be the same here, because Mandrake (because
of the pentium optimizations) makes more efficient use of the CPU than the
other big distributions.
You might want to try the 386/486 version when it's ready (should be
really soon now). Until then, you might want to try underclocking the CPU
- I'd like to know if that helps...
