though I am not a Linux guru by any means,
I would like to concur with the thoughs of Lyvim.

I have severial win only type bits of hardware, like my Nvidia card, Win
hp printer,
etc. and have found that as LX mentioned it was only a matter of
configuration.
In fact I like to try to put LM on older hardware to see if I can and
with only a few exceptions, ( mostly limited because of the gui
requirements in the latest releases )
I have had only minor problems, or issues which are of little real
importance. For example, I can't get LM_sensors to function properly on
one of my boxes running 8.2.
This is a non issue for me because I have an external readout for temps
anyway, and besides I'm sure it will be corrected soon anyway.

It's funny how there seems to be a view of some that older hardware, and
older versions of Mandrake, are not worth the effort. it's also amusing
how many of these who bash,
some older piece of hardware or OS, was something they praised not that
long ago.
Cutting edge is all well and good, but it also has it's down side of
needing tweaking to run really well on a large base of configurations. I
personally prefer LM 8.0 over any version so far, as I can get it to run
everything on everything I have. I like many of the new features of 8.2
and it runs better on my laptop, but on my main box, athlon 1 gig,
ep-8kta3 pro MB, Nvidia tnt, SB Live, 3com NIC's, adaptec 2906 scsi, 8.0
runs much better. Why should I or anyone change when I can do everything
I want with my hardware and a perfectly good older version of
mandrake???

This of course is only my humble opinion, and Your mileage may vary
I know I could have said IMHO and YMMV but it's still readable Yes?

Tongue very much in cheek ;-)
