http://www.xfree86.org/4.2.0/Status.html    If you look there you'll 
find various vendors (listed by chipset).  That's for XF-4.2, there's 
also pages for older XFree versions.  You won't find Hercules, they 
make cards, not chips.  That Herc you're lookin at is most likely a 
nVidia chipset.

      The only truly well supported opensource Vcards were 3dfx (eg, 
voodoo3). nVidia has 2d OSS support, ATI has sort'a kind'a OSS 
support, Matrox fairly decent OSS support.
