Replying to myself. Yes there is sound. I just started the game for the first time. On this system I have no trouble starting the game from the Amusement menu, sound worked. I also tried it from a terminal as user with the command I suggested without trouble. Check your sound configuration in the "Configure your desktop" manager. You may have a setting incorrect. Some on-board sound chips won't work in real-time priority mode. Interesting game. One of these days I may actually find time to try it.
