There are others who know a lot more about this than I do, but a quick google 
suggests that you are far from alone in this problem, and k3b seems to be the 
app most complained about.  Have you tried XCDRoast?  It isn't as pretty as 
k3b, and you do have to run the setup as root before users can use it, but 
I've generally found it reliable.  There are some things done easier in k3b, 
but that would buy you time while you troubleshoot this.
