I believe the cd burning problems I had were actually with cdrecord. k3b is
just a GUI front-end, to make it easier to set up what you want burned. It is
cdrecord that does the heavy lifting, and returns the obscure error messages
when something goes wrong.

So make sure you've installed the latest version of cdrecord from
http://www.eslrahc.com/

Also, make sure you don't have anything else running that's causing cpu or
disk contention, as that can easily cause a buffer underflow, especially on
older machines. Even burnfree, if you have it, doesn't seem to be all it's
cracked up to be. It may prevent an audio cd from being totally destroyed by
a buffer underrun, but as far as I can tell from the results, all it does is
insert blank spots instead. The resulting cds are not particularly pleasant
to listen to.

Personally, I've never found the brand of media to make any difference at all.
I even had some older cd-rws rated to a max of 4x, and k3b/cdrecord were
smart enough to step down the write speed appropriately.

Oh, and if the first two cds fail, you can be pretty sure the third, fourth
and fifth will too :^).
