To get a selection of an OS to boot:  

The easiest way that I know of is to use klilo, which will create a lilo.conf file for 
you, and reinstall lilo, which will give you your startup options.  However, I have 
had a 
good number of problems with this approach.  The way I do it is to look at 
/etc/lilo.conf, (use pico!) and firstly make sure that there isn't a windows partition 
set up in 
there already.  If there is, you're probably missing a timeout line, which you can set 
to 50 as a start with the line: timeout=50 towards the beginning.  If it is not there, 
then 
you will need to add a choice named windows, pointing to the partition that contains 
windows.  After this is done and saved, exit from the editor, type lilo -U (the 
capital 
is important) and then type lilo.  This should take care of this.

As far as modems go, nearly all external modems are compatible with linux, so long as 
they are not marked as windows-only.
