Basically, I came back from supper and found my system hung in standby mode and had to do a hard reboot. Linksys was "Red Lighting" the Internet LED.)
Up and running again, but no Internet.
Adsl ( Linksys WAG54G ) is 'Green Lighting' the Internet.
The night before, in an attempt to get WinMe connected, my ISP had given me a static IP.
So maybe things had caught up with me and I needed to reconfigure things.( I had by this time already
accessed the Gateway/router and made the necessary alterations as advised by my ISP.)
First port of call = Browser page for the Linksys. No go, got 404'ed.????????????
Open MCC = Removed everything Internet and restarted configuring.
First stop - Hardware : Ran config tool on eth0 as follows:
Choose ADSL
Next page showed only eth0 for Net Device
Tried both the DHCP and PPP over ATM ( PPPoA ) - ( my ISP requested this connection method.)
The following is what I did for the PPPoA choice.
First DNS Server = My ISP Primary IP
Second DNS Server = My ISP Secondary IP
My Account name for my ISP
My Password for that account
Selected Start at Boot - My system now hangs for a long time looking for Internet during bootup.
Selected the restart option.
Ok - as 'su' tried to ping my Gateway/router - Got " Network not available " ( This whilst all the while the Gateway/ Router was showing a green light re the Internet.[ Since the reboot ])
So....... My Gateway/router appears to have connected to the Internet OK, but my system doesn't or cannot use the eth0 NIC to connect to the Gateway/router ????
The way I see things at present is that the Linksys is OK but my system cannot see it via the ethernet card anymore. I say " anymore " because until I took a break last night, everything was working fine under my Mandrake10 Official system.
Any ideas on where I should look or do from here ?
My card appears to be recognised by my system -
[EMAIL PROTECTED] frank]$ lspci
<SNIP>
00:0e.0 Ethernet controller: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. RTL-8139/8139C/8139C+ (rev 10)
<etc>
One point here is that within MCC, the info for this card is missing the " Location on the bus " info under 'Internet>>Manage Connections>>Information tab, yet all other info is present.
Under the 'Hardware' tab there is a MAC address and " Media class: âNETWORK_ETHERNET " is listed, so I assume the correct modules are loaded.
Another bit of info. /etc/resolv.conf changes each time I try a new config. [ xxx.xx.xxx.xx replaces the actual IP addresses. ]
With DHCP choice AND whilst it worked fine using a Dynamic connection: [EMAIL PROTECTED] frank]$ cat /etc/resolv.conf nameserver 127.0.0.1 nameserver xxx.xx.xxx.xx nameserver xxx.xx.xxx.xx
And while trying the PPPoA way : [EMAIL PROTECTED] frank]$ cat /etc/resolv.conf search con local nameserver 127.0.0.1 nameserver xxx.xx.xxx.xx nameserver xxx.xx.xxx.xx
And right now after trying things with the router not connected - ( I'm back on dial-up, remember )
[EMAIL PROTECTED] frank]$ cat /etc/resolv.conf
search con local
# search con local con con local con local
nameserver 127.0.0.1
nameserver xxx.xx.xxx.xx
nameserver xxx.xx.xxx.xx
# nameserver xxx.xx.xxx.xx
# nameserver xxx.xx.xxx.xx # ppp temp entry
# nameserver xxx.xx.xxx.xx # ppp temp entry
# nameserver xxx.xx.xxx.xx #kppp temp entry
# nameserver xxx.xx.xxx.xx #kppp temp entry
# domain localdomain #kppp temp entry
# ppp temp entry
Then, maybe, I haven't got things right yet. I'm thinking, why all the Internet ISP stuff for the eth0 card, both via eth0 config and Adsl choice, when that information is already loaded into the Linksys Gateway/router. Don't I simply need the ethernet card to connect to the Router ????
And yeah - is there any tools that will allow me to test the card for operation so as to eliminate hardware failure ?
Hoping someone can assist. TIA --
