I think where you're going wrong is in choosing ADSL - the router is

connected to ADSL, but the ethernet connection should be configured on
the LAN option - at least, that's the way mine works! Try it and see...

Yes, the ADSL setting is for when the computer is connected directly to
the DSL or cable modem, and you require PPPoE or PPPoA to connect to the
Internet. When you are using a router, as you are in this case, then you
just need to set your ethernet connection to a standard DCHP configured
LAN connection. You need to do the same thing in ME.

When you have changed things to this, you should be able to ping your
Linksys router, as well as connect to its Web page. If you have PPPoE
anabled on the Linux box, then chances are you can not talk to anything
on the local network.

By the way, I thought the Linksys router included instructions on how to
set up the machines on the local network. You can not use your ISP's
directions for a single machine connected directly to the modem.

Thanks for the help folks, but I haven't won yet. Here's where I've been:

Using MCC

Under " Manage Connections "

Device selected:-
eth0: Realtek|RTL-8138

Tag TCP/IP:

IP Address : 192.168.1.10
Netmask : 255.255.255.0
Gateway : 192.168.1.1

Tag " Options "

[Checked] Start at boot
[UnChecked] Track network card id
[Checked] Network Hotplugging

Tag " Information "

Vendor: Realtek
Description: RTL-8139
Media class: NETWORK_ETHERNET
Module name: 8139too
Mac Address: 00:08:a1:36:ab:8e
Bus: PCI
Location on the bus: -

( Note the ldpci output here)
00:0e.0 Ethernet controller: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. RTL-8139/8139C/8139C+ (rev 10)

Result before reboot of anything is:
"The connection was refused when attempting to contact 192.168.1.1 "

[EMAIL PROTECTED] etc]# cat resolv.conf
search con local
# search con local con local con local con local con local con local con local con con local con local
nameserver 127.0.0.1
nameserver 202.89.128.16
nameserver 202.89.128.17
# nameserver 202.89.145.130
# nameserver 202.89.128.16 # ppp temp entry
# nameserver 202.89.128.17 # ppp temp entry

# ppp temp entry
**************************************************************************************

Next attempt via " New Connection "

Button selected = LAN connection

Button Net Device selected = eth0 etc

Button Automatic IP (BOOTTP/DHCP) selected

Configuring network device eth0 ( driver 8139to ) :
[Checked] Assign host name from DHCP
DHCP host name | Snapafun |

{taken from /etc/hosts =
[EMAIL PROTECTED] etc]# cat hosts
192.168.1.1 Snapafun.con Snapafun
<<my static online address>> Snapafun.con Snapafun
192.168.1.10 Snapafun.con Snapafun [ The result of my current attempts ]
192.168.1.111 Snapafun.con Snapafun [ The result of one of my attempts ]
#<<my static online address>> Snapafun.con Snapafun
192.168.1.0 Snapafun.con Snapafun [ Bad one here I believe and removed later.]
#Added to following to match /etc/sysconfig/network HOSTNAME=Snapafun.con
127.0.0.1 localhost } [You'll see this file gets dealt to by both MCC and Webmin later]

[UnChecked] Track network card id ( useful for laptops )
[Checked] Network Hotplugging
[Checked] Start at boot
Button = Advanced - selected dhcp-client
Host name (optional) | Snapafun.con |
Zeroconf Host name | Snapafun |
Selected 'Yes' to restart network

NOTE: Went to webmin to see what I could do and discovered that I do not have dhcpd installed ??????

So changed TCP/IP back to ' static ' within " Manage connections "

Tried :

[EMAIL PROTECTED] etc]# ping 192.168.1.1
PING 192.168.1.1 (192.168.1.1) 56(84) bytes of data.
From 192.168.1.10 icmp_seq=1 Destination Host Unreachable
<<snip>>
ping: sendmsg: Operation not permitted
From 192.168.1.10 icmp_seq=2 Destination Host Unreachable
ping: sendmsg: Operation not permitted
<<etc>>

And ............

[EMAIL PROTECTED] etc]# cat hosts
192.168.1.1 Snapafun.con Snapafun SnapafunFrank 127.0.0.1
192.168.1.10 Snapafun.con Snapafun
#<<my static online address>> Snapafun.con Snapafun
127.0.0.1 localhost
#Added to following to match /etc/sysconfig/network HOSTNAME=Snapafun.con

And............

[EMAIL PROTECTED] etc]# cat /etc/sysconfig/network
HOSTNAME=Snapafun.con
NETWORKING=yes
GATEWAY=192.168.1.1

So back MCC>>Hardware>>Hardware>>Ethernetcard>>Run config tool:
LAN
eth0
Manual configuration
   IP address: 192.168.1.10 [ I guessed this one ??? ]
   Netmask: 255.255.255.0
[Only select this page =] Network Hotplugging
Host name : Snapafun.con
DNS server 1 = 127.0.0.1
DNS server 2 = My ISP Primary DNS Server
DNS server 3 = I cleared this one
Search Domain = con
Gateway  = 192.168.1.1
Zeroconf Host name = Snapafun
Then selected ' restart '
Still no joy with the ping command - same result as above.

One point of concern here : Whenever I go back to " Manage connections ' and ' Remove a connection ' , the adsl choice is there even though I have chosen to remove it before.

And now I have gone back and removed the " Start at boot " option.

First thing is to restart the X session to see if anything works ::::

NB. All this while, the ADSL Gateway/router is displaying all green LEDs.

Restarted " startx " but no change.

So I'm back to square one.

Look..... I do not know if the following has something to do with it but I thought I would mention that not only am I unable to use the number keys on my system within Mandrake ( Windows is OK and so are livecds and yeah, the 'Numlock" LED is on ) but right now my scroll wheel ability has ceased also. Something in the system conflicting perhaps ? )

So, any more thoughts anyone ?
