I have installed LE 2005 on my spare hard drive, for checking it
out. The installation included both KDE and Gnome. But Gnome does
not appear as a session in the desktop manager for selecting.

There is probably a file somewhere which has to be edited, but I
can't find it. I thought that Gnome should appear automatically in
the list of sessions.

Please, how do I get Gnome to run?

Many thanks

I would wipe (write zeros ) the drive and do a new install with Gnome
selected.

Have found starting with a "clean" drive sometimes helps.

Gnome should appear in the Session select box -& it should work.

Thanks for the suggestion, Earl. I did as you said.

Sorry, but I have had no success.

I did a fresh install with only Gnome and ICEWM selected. There was only ICEWM shown in the list of sessions in GDM. Trying to start Gnome via a Failsafe boot and "startx gnome" did not work (it ran ICEWM instead!).

So, whilst in ICEWM, using Drakrpm, I uninstalled Gnome and reinstalled it. This time I got the two seconds of Gnome starting again, then nothing.

I then repeated all the above but without ICEWM being installed. Again, nothing with a failsafe boot and the flash of starting with a graphical boot.

As no one else appears to have had any problems with running Gnome, I am wondering if there is something wrong with my DVD. KDE is quite OK. It looks as though I will have to abandon seeing what Gnome in LE2005 is like.

Cheers

Keith

Why don't you try MCC? Once you've set up your sources from easyurpmi, you could disable the DVD as a source, then look in the software installation section and see if there are some Gnome packages that you haven't installed. Even if they are missing from (or corrupted on) your DVD, you should be able to install them from the mirrors.
