Add to your collection of software NEEDS: * Spybot Search and Destroy * AutoPatcherXP (do a search on www.betanews.com) - this is a package of all the necessary patches from MS that you can install in one fell swoop instead of sitting around waiting for the massive patches/updates download. * Turn off automatic updates * Turn off background intelligent file transfers * Turn off UPNP and SSPD * Turn off Smart Card and Smart Card Helper * Turn off Portable Media Serial Number * Turn off Remote Registry * Turn off Error Reporting * Turn off Security Centre * Turn off Windows Firewall (not Sygate) * Turn off Messenger * Turn off Alerter * Turn off Remote Desktop Assistance * Turn off System Restore (it doesn't work anyways and is more than just a waste of disk space) Quite a bit of work just to get ONE workstation up and running properly, don't ya think? And folks freak out when I tell them how much it basically costs to do a re-installation (that is, until they SIT and SEE what has to be done and how it affects their system, then they shut up because they're humbled at what is necessary to have a safe box). -- YankDownUnder aka stephen kuhn #mandriva channel op - irc.freenode.net Mandriva Official IRC Support ----------------------------------------------- Registered Linux User # 267497 ----------------------------------------------- Win98 error 008: Illegal copies of Microsoft software found on harddisk, and the modem didn't respond to our attempts to call the FBI.
