I have 2 hd's a 80gb with a 20gb ntfs for windoz ( to play C&C ) and an 160gb. What I want to do is use the 160 for /home and the remaining empty space on the 80gb for the rest of mdk. I am having another bash at it now.

Not sure what to tell you.  I had a somewhat similar experience.  I had "/"and "/home" on a 30 gig hd and then bought a 200 gig hd.  I created a 30 gig partition on the 200 and backed up my existing home.  I then did a clean install of 200LE with the 30 gig having "/" and swap while the remaining 170 gig became "/home".  I used the custom as I had to create/resiize some existing partitions.
I had no problems formatting.  What file system are you using for the partitions?
