These distros (there are several) are all on a bootable CD, and they run from the CD--nothing is installed to the hard drive, although with a bit of tweaking, you can write files to the drive (create a "persistent home directory". I usually recommend Knoppix, because it seems to have an almost flawless ability to recognize hardware. These distros run from RAM, so they are memory hogs, though. If you are short on RAM, Damn Small Linux (DSL) is the way to go. It is also Knoppix based, but it can run on as little as 16 Megs. It is GUI, but somewhat minimalistic for a newbie to have to learn from. You can also fix some fairly severe screw-ups by booting with Knoppix, making the files on your drive writeable, and editing out the errors. I wouldn't want to do this with an NTFS drive, but it may be possible with the Captive NTFS Tool.
