As far as support is concerned, all you have to do is use the restore CD to install windows again, and they will support you. When I had to return my dell laptop, I backed up linux, reinstalled windows and sent it back with no problems. They didnt know the difference. The problem was with the battery and the DVD operation of the combo drive, so I could still install W2K from the Cd.

Yeah, I like that feeling too. The problem is M$ don't care, because by
then they already have your money. Supposedly you can insist on a refund if
you immediately remove everything, write a letter declaring this, and send
it and the cds back. I haven't tried, and I've heard it requires much
persistence and the occasional legal threat to achieve it.

Hmmm, I'm prone to think that M$ got paid....either way. Doesn't really matter if the hardware got sold. Objectively seen it's the companies like Dell (and IBM and so and so on) who pay that tax. They're too scared to lose their market position. If they had half the chance they'd let the consumer pay but the market's too sharp for that.

If I was in the USA I'd certainly give it a try....over here in Europe it's not worth it. Like somebody stated: the M$_included_hardware is very often cheaper.............. so, if M$ wants to subsidize me (indirectly) for putting Linux on a box: Who am I to complain! ;)
