Oh well, I'll still take the OS-free PC next time I need one. Last
time I rolled my own to avoid the M$ tax. A fun learning
experience, but buying the parts retail actually costs more than
buying a complete machine from Dell.

My experience also. At a rough estimate, from Ideal Computing 50% more
than for their ready-made systems.

Ron, if someone bought a Dell machine with XP installed and took it off, replacing it with Linux, do you know if it would invalidate their guarantee? --- snip ----

That is quite likely. I recently bought a Toshiba laptop from PC World and
told them I would be wiping Windows and installing Linux. They refused to give
me any guarantee, even though it was just the hardware that needed to be
covered.
Not unexpected.
about the time MDK 7.2 was out, it was announced that if you had a gateway and called for support, and admitted to having installed any open source operating system, your warranty ended with that phone call
