OT for here, but I know that many here either use XP themselves or get
called out to 'fix' it for friends - this might save you some
head-scratching!
A few days ago a friend called to say that all her documents had gone
missing, in fact the entire 'My Documents' folder had disappeared! I
rushed round to have a look, and eventually found 'My Documents' - with
all sub-folders and files still apparently intact - hidden away inside
one of the Norton system folders.
A quick drag'n'drop restored everything to the proper place, and I
thought no more about it until another friend called a couple of days
later with exactly the same problem! I gave her instructions by phone
and, yes, her 'My Documents' was in the Norton system folder!
Unfortunately (against my advice!), both friends have both Windows &
Norton set for automatic updates (one on a Dell desktop machine, the
other on a Sony Vaio laptop), so I don't know whether to blame Microsoft
or Symantec for this, but it's easy to fix once you know where to look!
