This come as a relief (except for the annoyance of the money blown on the 2006 Powerpack). So the problems with Mandriva aren't just me. Kubuntu, here I come.
I was with SuSE from 6 through 9, and it steadily got better. Then they were bought out by Novell and the linux desktop ceased to be a priority. I suspect that the linux desktop is now a low priority for most of the for-profit linux undertakings. I personally am annoyed at the increasing lack of SCSI support (see all the stuff that cdrecord's Joerg Schilling has posted elsewhere) and the proliferation of running-all-the-time stuff like HAL, which is just does not seem to work well with a file-based UNIX-like system.
