 I'm using Mdv 2006 (as per sig.) and yes kscd does open on inserting
Cd and differently does not appear to be playing without sound.

When I insert the Cd and Kscd opens a dialogue box opens which says:

CDROM read or access error (or no audio disc in drive)
please make sure you have access permission to: /dev/hdb
