well, to see if somehow the binary is there, 

try the full path, to find the full path, in a terminal, type

$ whereis fortune
fortune: /usr/games/fortune /usr/share/man/man6/fortune.6.bz2

thats where mine is. Then type the full path,

$ /usr/games/fortune
Progress might have been all right once, but it's gone on too long.

also, check the file itself:

$ ls -l /usr/games/fortune
-rwxr-xr-x   1 root root   17K Jun  7  2004 fortune

Then see if you can get a list of files that are defaulted for
$ fortune -f
100.00% /usr/share/games/fortunes
        0.83% MS-FORTUNES
        2.85% art
        0.06% ascii-art
        1.25% law
        6.37% computers
        7.06% cookie
        ...
        ..

whats this Kevin, is this generated or an already generated
one, re-hashed ?
